I love the precision and crispness of Piet Mondrian’s work. I love the luminous glow of stained glass. And I love the ephemeral grittiness of great graffiti. I wondered if I could mash together all of that with the tools with which I’ve achieved some competence. I’m not sure that’s what I achieved, but I like where I ended up.

All of these were made the same way. All were drawn by hand using pen and paper. Because I wanted really sharp, crisp lines, the drawings were scanned and imported into Illustrator. I traced over each line to recreate the drawing.

I used the heavy black lines to create individual “cells”. I created a palette I wanted to use for each final image and I used that palette to color each individual cell, depending on where I wanted the light source to be.

Finally I imported those cells into Photoshop to repaint them with custom brushes to add an organic, shaded look.
