I’ve been writing every day. But mostly it’s crap. It’s been dark, a super downer. Ugh. Darker than I feel, for the most part. I mean, like all of us, I’ve been anxious and frustrated. I’m worried about my sons, neither of whom is home. I’m worried about the fact that they’re finishing college in a few weeks in the middle of an economic crash and pandemic-induced quarantine. I’m frustrated at being caged while fundamentally being a little rebellious. I mean, this whole thing blows.
And I believe it’s necessary.
But at any rate, I’m not normally a gloomy person. I love The Wife, even though She’s ALWAYS around. I love to cook, it’s my main thing. I can draw, write, play video games, watch TV. It’s all good. It’s all good.
Last night I fell deep down the rabbit hole, listening to music for hours and hours. I was musing on weeks and weeks of Social Distancing. And I had a thought: I’m going to make a bunch of playlists. Now, I’ve been making playlists for years and years. I carefully curate them, plot them out. Some of them are years in the making, always being refined and updated. For example, Surfy Groove is my vacation/beach/boat list. ‘80’s Bunk is, well, you know. A Perfect Tool is my list of favorite stuff that Maynard James Keenan has done. Dear Barbara is my list of favorite songs written by women. Herbert is my snowboarding playlist, and Troy Don’t Dance is my favorite dance songs that I don’t dance to. You get the drill.
Here’s what I’m thinking: I’m going to post one playlist per day until the Quarantine is over. One a day. Here are the rules I’ve set for myself: Each list will be 12 songs. Each list will have some kind of theme that I have to be able to explain. No song will be on multiple lists. Unless the list itself is about one band/group/individual, no artists will appear multiple times on the same list.
If I’ve perpetrated, in your opinion, an egregious musical inclusion or oversight, I’d love to hear it. (Except you M.S., The Chauffeur is definitely #1)
Ok, here we go.
