As a young teenager, and like most of us, I tried on different personas. Mostly with little luck. It actually wasn’t until about ‘89 or ‘90 that I found myself getting comfortable with myself. That was also around the time when the style rock stars cultivated happened to match my own. By 1990 I was almost exclusively wearing flannel, shorts and hiking boots. I was tattooed, with spiky hair, a beard or goatee, and earrings.
But in the early and mid ‘80s I was a super skinny, weird kid with spiky hair. And always with headphones on. Then, it being the Golden Age of MTV, I was introduced to Billy Idol. He was cheesy and melodramatic, but talented. Plus, he seemed to be mine. No one I knew was into him. That spoke to me.
